Is there anybody out there?

Voyager 1 was launched on September 5th, 1977. I was nine years old. Today, it is over 15 billion miles away from Earth, moving at 38,000 miles per hour. It operates on 69 KB of memory, using modified Fortran code. It still sends back amazing data to our planet. According to Garmin, my little watch has 64,000 MB of memory and 256GB of RAM. And that’s a drop in the ocean beside the computing power of the mobile phone it communicates with. And yet. They can be two feet apart and refuse to acknowledge each other’s presence like a pair of sulking divorcees.

And I haven’t even started on the wondrous vagaries of Bluetooth on Apple devices.

In other news, it appears that Summer is over. The weather has been wondrous, really, so I can’t complain. But the app promised sunshine this evening, and it never happened. So I am officially miffed. But running has continued. And here are some photos from a recent run along the canal…

Coltsfoot
Purple Loosestrife
Devil’s-bit Scabious

And here is a photo of me with the Gallagher brothers prior to their Dublin concert. Yes, it’s really them…

And above is a pic from our local pub, the Salmon Leap Inn, with S and her niece and nephew, all the way from Paris. Too young for pints, but there’s time 😉

And now, a cow…

And here’s me, wearing a box on my head at work. As you do.

  1. That was a great first paragraph – made me laugh out loud in recognition! We do need some rain in this fine weather we are having though. Our water butts are bone dry. Having said that, the temperature seems to have dropped into an autumnal vibe in the last week here on the Wirral, which has been much nicer for running in.

  2. Voyager 1 is all very well but I fear I am now operating of 50KB of memory and reducing all the time. With a hose pipe ban in force here, I’m actually looking forward to a bit of rain (overnight only, of course). Great pictures.
